Autumn Injuries to Watch Out For
Don’t Fall for These Common Autumn Around-the-House Mishaps
As the heat of summer finally starts to release its grip on the South, it becomes possible to imagine tackling neglected chores, picking up a DIY project, or even stepping outside to start some autumn yard work. And while it feels great to cross things off your to-do list, it’s important to remember that home is the place where you’re most likely to have an accident.
According to the National Safety Council, Americans suffered 36 million preventable injuries at home in 2021. That’s more than the total number of injuries in public places, the workplace, and motor vehicle crashes combined. Slips, trips, and falls accounted for nearly one-quarter of all home injuries with water spills, rugs, cords, clutter, loose stair treads, and poor lighting are among the culprits.
Here are a few quick and easy steps you can take to reduce your risk of injury:
● Secure area rugs: Tripping on the edge of an area rug is one of the leading causes of falls. Use rug pads or double-sided rug tape to keep rugs securely in place.
● Act quickly: Clean up liquid spills immediately to avoid slipping.
● Maximize lighting: Be sure dark halls, stairways, and shaded corners of your home and yard are well-lit.
● Make bathrooms safer: Non-slip mats or decals in bathtubs and on shower floors can help prevent accidental falls, as can non-skid bath mats outside showers.
● Eliminate clutter: Don’t let items pile up, especially on the floor where they can block access. Try to keep clothes, shoes, books, and toys put away, especially in high-traffic areas. Never leave items on or around stairs.
● Manage cords and cables: Use cord clips and channels to keep cables corralled, off the floor, and looking better, too. It’s also a good idea to keep your home’s wiring in good repair; faulty wiring in homes is a common hazard.
● Use stools and stepladders properly: Don’t stand on tables, chairs or any other furniture not designed for you to stand on. Use a step stool or ladder, and be sure it provides you enough lift, so you’re not overreaching. Be sure ladders are properly opened and set on a stable, even surface, and if possible have someone “spot” you in case of falls.
● Make stairs safe: Stair falls are among the most common and often most serious home accidents. Make sure staircases have secure handrails, have no loose stair treads, or loose carpet, and are uniform — that is, every step has the same rise and run. Adding non-slip strips to your stairs can also prevent falls.
